Programs we offer

Rookies music program for children in Issaquah

At School of Rock Issaquah, our music program for children with no previous musical experience (typically ages 6 to 7-years-old) is called Rookies. Rookies students have one weekly group music lesson where they learn fundamentals like chords, rhythm and song structure. Kids get to learn and experiment with multiple instruments so they can later decide which one they ultimately want to continue pursuing in Rock 101.

The Path to Take the Stage

All of our music programs are designed to inspire students to learn and develop a strong musical proficiency. At School of Rock Issaquah, younger students who are not ready for a more comprehensive program like Rock 101 can start in Rookies. Additionally, students who have completed the Little Wing program will progress into the Rookies music program. No prior musical experience is needed for Rookies. Once your child is ready for private music lessons (typically older than first or second graders), they will graduate into our Rock 101 program.

Rock 101 is one of School of Rock Issaquah's top programs for kids and beginners. Students have one weekly group rehearsal where they learn to play classic rock songs that have been simplified for beginner musicians. Additionally, Rock 101 students in Issaquah have a weekly private music lesson with an instructor who helps them learn the concepts and skills behind their performance songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our music programs for kids in Issaquah are designed to get students on stage performing, with the goal of building strong musical proficiency. Younger students at School of Rock Issaquah who have participated in the Rookies program can move to our Rock 101 music program once they're ready. Additionally, students (typically ages 8 to 13-years-old) can begin Rock 101 without any prior experience. The goal of this rock program is to quickly develop a basic competence on students' chosen instruments before moving on to our famous Performance Program.

Performance music program for teens in Issaquah

The Performance Program at School of Rock Issaquah is our hallmark music program, where tens of thousands of students enroll each year. It consists of a weekly group rehearsal where kids and teens learn by playing rock music's most iconic songs with a band composed of their peers. Students are assigned songs and parts that are tailored to them based on their age, experience and ability to learn new skills and concepts. Students then work through their parts in weekly private music lessons, refining the skills and concepts that those songs introduce. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare kids and teens for live performances. Every few months, School of Rock Issaquah Performance Program students take the stage and play at local Issaquah music venues in front of a live audience.

The Path to Take the Stage

School of Rock Issaquah's music programs for kids and teens are designed to inspire by getting students on stage and performing. All of our other music education programs focus on readying students for our famous Performance Program. This is where students develop incredible musical skills. Performance Program students have often gone through our Rock 101 program first or have some previous basic music experience. These young musicians will have custom development plans outlined by their instructors with key concepts reinforced during private lessons and group rehearsals, all with the goal of performing live at a Issaquah music venue.

Songwriting

Age 12 and over

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens teaches the fundamentals of songwriting, arrangement and music theory, and helps students compose original works.  At School of Rock Issaquah, songwriting students receive one weekly private lesson where they learn concepts, technique and theory on an instrument of their choice. These principles are then applied in a weekly group lesson where students work together on songwriting exercises and lyrical workshops.  Every few months, Songwriting students take the stage to perform or band together to record their original songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens in Issaquah is designed to create musical proficiency through the creation of original music. Students at School of Rock Issaquah who have completed our Rock 101 program can move to our Songwriting program once they're ready. Additionally, new students who have prior experience with and basic knowledge of an instrument can also begin Songwriting. The program culminates with a live showcase where students perform their original compositions in bands at a local music venue. Students taking the Songwriting Program online will remotely record their original songs to produce a demo of the class's music.

At School of Rock Issaquah, our students can take online, one-on-one music instruction from the comfort of their homes. We call this program School of Rock Remote. This online music program contains weekly one-on-one instruction conducted by our expert School of Rock instructors in a safe virtual lesson room.

Students will receive their training using our proprietary education program, The School of Rock Method™, which couples live video lessons with our proprietary Method App™, SongFirst Approach™ and Method Books™.

Adult music program in Issaquah for students over 18

School of Rock Issaquah's Adult Program is for students over 18 years old who are looking to either improve their musical proficiency or pick up an instrument with no prior musical experience. As with most School of Rock music programs, the Adult Program uses a performance-based music education approach. This means the curriculum focuses on learning music concepts and applying them in a live performance setting. Our Adult Music Program includes one weekly private music lesson and a weekly group rehearsal. Every student at School of Rock Issaquah is placed in a band of fellow adults and then assigned specific songs as a way of learning key music concepts and skills. Adult students then take the stage to play at a live show in Issaquah.

The School of Rock Issaquah Adult Program is open to all experience levels and each student will follow a customized learning plan developed by their instructor. Adult students will work together during rehearsal to prepare for a live performance at a real rock venue in Issaquah.

House Band

Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock Issaquah House Band music program gives students under 18 the opportunity to join a gigging band composed of fellow musicians from their school. These students perform additional live shows throughout the year. All students in the Performance Program have the opportunity to audition for a spot in School of Rock Issaquah's House Band. Once selected, House Band members become leaders in their School of Rock community and perform live shows at WA rock venues throughout the year.

The Path to Take the Stage

Performance is the core of School of Rock's educational approach. Therefore, we create additional opportunities for students to perform on stages throughout Issaquah and the rest of WA. The House Band music program allows each school's most talented students the opportunity to join a band and play routinely in front of live audiences. Once a member, students will gain real music experience associated with gigging musicians and will become leaders and mentors inside the School of Rock community.

AllStars

Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock AllStars Tour takes the very best students from around the world and sends them on a nationwide summer tour across the United States. Less than 1% of School of Rock students are selected each year to represent School of Rock as an AllStar. All Performance Program students are eligible to audition for this prestigious program. The intensive audition process starts off with video submissions followed by live auditions. Once selected, AllStar students will have an authentic touring experience including traveling on a tour bus, doing tour publicity and starring in nightly performances at famous venues and festivals during a two-week tour.

Becoming an AllStar is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student. They play on legendary stages large and small, including The Knitting Factory, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, The Troubadour and Lollapalooza. AllStar students often go on to have accomplished careers in the music industry. Former AllStars have gone on to become touring artists, star in Broadway musicals, get signed to record deals, become finalists on talent competitions like "The Voice" and "American Idol" and have other notable roles in the music industry.

Chad Fondren Owner

Chad Fondren is a father of two and a local music industry veteran. Currently he is also serving as Director of Sales for Disc Makers, the nation's largest CD/DVD/vinyl manufacturer. Over the last 20 years he has run a successful record label focusing on punk music, was Director of Operations for the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra, ran a local booking agency/concert production company and managed a studio teaching private trumpet lessons to kids. Chad earned his Bachelor's Degree in Music Business from Central Washington University, with a minor in Trumpet Performance. He is especially excited now in his mission at School of Rock Issaquah.

TRACY FONDREN Co-Owner, General Manager

Tracy Fondren is a lifelong Pacific Northwest native and experienced musician (drums, voice and piano/keyboards) with heavy ties to the Seattle music community and scene. Prior to becoming the Co-owner and GM of School of Rock Issaquah, she spent 10 years working in Music and Image Licensing at Getty Images. Previously, working in Project Management for Indie artists and labels at a CD manufacturer, she met her husband to be, Chad. Her passion for music and kids drove her to pitch the opening of a music school to Chad in 2014, and two years later, the School of Rock Issaquah was born.

Milo Mullins Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher

Milo Mullins has been a touring bassist for over 10 years with PNW bands that range from metal to alternative rock to country music. With thousands of hours of stage time under his belt, Milo knows life on the road. His experience in both the performing and technical sides of music has fueled his ability to write in all the styles he plays. With a degree in Music Composition at The Evergreen State College, Milo uses his knowledge of music theory and arrangement to compose, record, and perform his own music live. Milo believes above all else, music should be fun–it should be a way to explore one's own creative ability and find themselves through it.

Calah Webb Assistant General Manager

Calah Webb's a homegrown Washington native with roots in Maple Valley. She was raised around every type of music you can imagine, from her grandpa's bluegrass band to her dad's fondness of Pearl Jam. Her dad is a part-time sound engineer so she's been a backstage roadie almost all her life, tagging along on any show/fest/concert he put on. When she's not hanging out in the music scene, she's online playing video games or doing crazy makeup looks/nail art. Any creative outlet you can name, she loves. After having been in the salon/spa business for almost seven years, Calah's ready to put away her nail polish and facial masks and focus on music.

Kaedyn Kashmir Singing Teacher

Kaedyn Kashmir is a vocal instructor who taught a wide range of ages since she began college in 2017. She graduated with her Associates in Arts with highest honors and Phi Theta Kappa at the age of 18 and is furthering her education at Cornish College of the Arts in their music curriculum. She began to sing and play guitar at 10 years old, winning the state competition Reflections with an original song. She has released three albums so far--one at 13 years old, the second at 15, and the third at 17. She is a classically trained mezzo-soprano with a dedication to being a lifelong learner.

As an avid world traveler and performer, she has immersed herself in a multitude of cultures that all have different types of music--40+ countries later, she became an exchange student in Japan for a semester and learned about gagaku (orchestral court music), Min'yoo folk music, and the more modern J-pop and J-rock. She believes that incorporating different styles into her lessons benefits not only students' musical knowledge, but promotes their enjoyment as well.

Kaedyn encourages a "song-first" method, which allows the student to pick their own songs that they would like to master. She tailors the lesson to the student's choice and encourages healthy singing techniques that prevent the student from over-exerting their voice and at the same time improve their tone, sound quality, resonance, and pitch.

Zak Williams Drum Teacher

Zak Williams has been playing drums for over 10 years, and performing professionally for the last 5. He was born in Seattle, but lived in Mississippi for over 13 years where he attended high school and participated in statewide music competitions, ranking 1st in the State for Classical/Orchestra Percussion in 2020-2021. He moved home to Seattle this year, and in addition to teaching, he is majoring in Music Education & Music Therapy at Seattle Pacific University. He loves working with young musicians of all experience levels, and can't wait to help kids reach their musical goals!

Singing Teacher DARELLE HOLDEN

DARELLE HOLDEN Singing Teacher

Darelle is a vocal instructor at School of Rock with a degree in Vocal Performance from Berklee College of Music and a B.S of Communication from University of Phoenix. Darelle loves performing and teaching all kinds of music, Rock, Blues, Pop, R&B and everything in between. She also specializes in performance coaching helping students find his or her own style. Darelle worked as a touring musician, performing, recording and touring with many famous artists such as Tom Jones, Earth Wind and Fire and even did a gig with Stevie Wonder. Darelle also loves songwriting and recording. She released her first EP, Can You Hear Me, in 2012 and is releasing her second EP; self titled Darelle Holden, in July 2021. Darelle is recording her next EP right now for release in 2022 and you can find her music on Spotify, iTunes and anywhere you listen to music.

Delanie Montoya was born and raised in Aztec, New Mexico. She is a trained percussionist and recently graduated from Utah State University with a bachelor's degree in music education with an emphasis in band. She loves teaching and hopes to share her passion for teaching and music with her students. She loves attending rock and punk music concerts. Some of her favorite concerts have included Def Leppard, Poison, Our Last Night, Issues, Emarosa, and Dance Gavin Dance. She is super excited to be teaching drums for School of Rock.

EVIE SCOTT Studio Coordinator

Geneviève, who goes by Evie, grew up in Washington State exploring the music and culture of Seattle. She loved participating on stage in musical theater and show choir from middle school until graduation. In high school, Evie also designed/built sets and assisted with the technical aspects of theater. In her spare time she builds large recycled sculptures, plays the castanets, belly dances, and longboards. Evie loves to sing, dance, and learn new skills. In the past she experimented with many lines of work, from training horses to working nights at a homeless shelter. Now Evie is excited to be a part of the School of Rock Issaquah family and bring more music back into her life.

Mario Curay Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher

Mario Curay is a Guitarist and audio engineer. He is currently the touring Guitarist for Seattle emo band, Fiore. Some of his favorite groups range from Nirvana all the way to Meshuggah. Mario is stoked to be a part of School of Rock staff and can't wait to introduce your children into the band experience.

JESSE WICKMAN Drum Teacher

Jesse Wickman is a working musician and Drum Instructor who has been playing for 36+ years. He is a passionate and dedicated player who has been playing drums full time since the age of thirteen. Since moving to the Bay Area in 1989, he has proven himself to be a very accomplished and versatile musician, excelling in all varieties of music, including Jazz, improvisation, polkas, various styles of Latin, Country, ska, Rock, Punk, and much more. He can play anything, authentically. Jesse has compiled a long list of recording credits, both as a session musician and with his own creative projects. He has toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada and continues to maintain a very active performance and teaching schedule. He also has a great deal of experience with the performing arts (video games, plays, accompaniment, etc).

Mr. Wickman is a very fast learner with great music reading skills. He has always worked hard to stake new ground in drumming utilizing both his tasteful compositional stylings and his dynamic improvisation style, and he possesses a versatility and ability to thrive in a wide range of musical styles. Past and present bands include Nuisance and Fifteen (Lookout Records ), Undertoad and The Conspiracy (Flying Harold Records), Army of Ants (Jazz improvisation), Blindspot (ska), Edaline (Law of Inertia Records), Blue Ribbon (Country), One Horse Town and Shelby Cobra and The Mustangs (Outlaw Country), Indie Rock band Inkwell, and Victim's Family (from S.F.). Many of these bands have been featured in the pages of Section M, The Independent, The Press Democrat, and other bay area publications. Jesse is now a beloved Drum Instructor at School of Rock in Issaquah, Washington. He was the percussion coach for Santa Rosa Accelerated Charter School and Maria Carillo High School bands for 7 years, and also records regularly with many bands in his studio including: Steve Roybal, Amber Lee and the Anomilies, Snag, The Mood, Trial by Combat and many more. Jesse has also been involved in a free Jazz group since 1994 that was called Army of Ants and in 2001 played with Frenzy trio.

JACKSON BENGTSSON Singing Teacher, Keyboard Teacher

Jackson Bengtsson is a nonbinary performer based in Seattle. She is the lead vocalist of the band Designer Disguise and has been performing since the age of 10. Private music lessons have been and continue to be a part of Jackson's life having taken 12 years of private voice and teaching the past 3 years. With experience singing in choirs, a capella groups, musical theater productions, operas, pop groups, hip hop groups, and metal groups Jackson has a breadth of experience and knowledge that leaves her well equipped to teach any student. More than anything Jackson has a love and passion for singing and music generally. "I believe music is inherently magical and healing. I hope to create a safe space where students of all levels can interact with music without judgment or fear."

JOSIAH CHIKALLA Keyboard Teacher

Josiah (friends call him Joe) is a Pianist who has been playing for over 2 decades. He has been teaching piano for about 7 years to students ranging anywhere from 5 years old to 16 years old. Throughout those 7 years, he has had students of every kind. Joe says that being Hyper-active himself (and having to learn how to navigate life with this challenge) he understands how daunting learning any instrument can seem, and how challenging it can be to really "stick to it" once you've found one you like. Learning piano is not meant to be a "chore"! Joe combines his enthusiastic energy with a very unique approach to teaching the piano resulting in a fun and engaging way to learn HIS favorite instrument YOUR way! Robert Roth is mostly known as the singer, guitarist and songwriter for the Sub Pop and Capitol Records artist Truly. He's also played out for many years as a solo artist, touring the U.S. as well as Europe with a full band after releasing his internationally critically acclaimed L.P. 'Someone Somewhere…'. which he wrote, produced, engineered played nearly all of the instruments including guitars, an array of vintage keyboards, bass and drums. Dozens of Roth's compositions have been used in television and film. He's also collaborated with many other artists over the years such as writing and recording with Poet and singer Jim Carroll ('The Basketball Diaries', "People Who Died') for his Mercury Records L.P. 'Pools of Mercury', contributing to Built to Spill's Warner Brothers Records debut 'Perfect from Now On' and most recently with local singer songwriter Star Anna with their psychedelic folk duo Littlespirits. Before releasing his first material in the height of the Seattle Grunge explosion with Truly, Robert started playing bass the day after he saw the band Queen in Seattle when he was fourteen. Within less than two years the band he started with his friends in Olympia Washington were playing Classic Rock, Punk and New Wave covers along with original material at high school and college dances and clubs. After graduating high school he enrolled at Western Washington University studying music composition and psychology for two years before moving to Seattle and dedicating himself to writing, recording and performing original material and founding Truly with Hiro Yamamoto, founding member and bass player for Soundgarden and Mark Pickerel, founding member and drummer of the Screaming Trees. After releasing a single and an E.P. on Seattle's Sub Pop Records they were signed to Capitol and released 'Fast Stories… from Kid Coma' to wide critical acclaim. After touring the U.S. half a dozen times Truly embarked on a full extensive European tour which helped solidify a still ongoing fan base around the world. Truly and Roth continue to release new music and 'Fast Stories… from Kid Coma' is soon to be reissued world wide by Bang! Records.

Mike Lampkin is a former student and current teacher with School of Rock. His primary instrument is guitar, but plays bass and keyboards as well. Mike likes metal, especially progressive metal. His favorite band is Gojira, but he also likes grunge, progressive rock, and some classic rock.

HENRY WALLACE Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher

Henry had a passion for music from the young age of 5. He moved on to brass instruments (trumpet and french horn) beginning in elementary, and continued through high school, adding guitar along the way. Guitar quickly became his instrument of choice.

After spending 5 years taking lessons and performing in School of Rock's Performance Program, playing guitar and bass in numerous shows, he has become a highly skilled guitarist and has joined the School of Rock team as a guitar and bass instructor. As such, he has a unique insider's perspective as well as experience playing many different styles of guitar from Classic Rock to Blues to Death Metal. Henry is excited to share his knowledge and teach the next generation of rock stars!

Cole Paramore Drum Teacher

Cole has been playing and teaching drums for 10 years. Having studied under acclaimed drummers such as Mike Johnston, Mark Guiliana and Robert Searight, Cole has developed a proficiency in a number of styles including rock, pop, funk, R&B, blues and jazz. You can see Cole playing live in the Pacific Northwest with artist Harrison B.

Max Cobb Guitar Teacher, Bass Guitar Teacher, Keyboard Teacher

Max Cobb is a professional guitarist, bassist, pianist and vocalist based in the Seattle area. After studying jazz theory and guitar performance at Gonzaga University, he has gone on to perform professionally at weddings and events in the Northwest and Austin, TX since 2012. When he's not performing, Max teaches music to students of all ages. He's been teaching private guitar and piano lessons for over five years, working with kids, adults, handicapped adults and seniors.
